Assistant Director – Self-Help Housing and Counseling

The Assistant Program Director supports the Director of Mutual Self-Help Housing, participates in the overall management of the organization, and will direct the work of a preconstruction team that markets, recruits participants, and prepares loan packages for families building their own homes, as well as our team of housing counselors who assist prospective homebuyers with credit counseling, budget planning, and home ownership education.

Seeking a dynamic manager with demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, experience in driving production, and ability to coordinate multiple activities. Empathy and compassion for low-income populations, as well as alignment with the mission and values of Self-Help Enterprises is essential.

Experience in supervising staff required. Helpful additional experience includes any of the following:  eligibility determination, home financing, title, homeowner insurance, community outreach, real estate, loan packaging, banking, and public benefit processing.

  • Assist with implementation, planning and development of the comprehensive program.
  • Provide assistance, guidance and direction to program staff.
  • Assist the Director in supervision of program staff and implementation of programs in accordance with the values and mission of SHE.
  • Represent SHE to partner agencies and participants.
  • Prepare required internal and external activity and progress reports.
  • Assure compliance with SHE policies and with quality and cost standards at all program levels.
  • Effectively coordinate activities with other SHE programs.
  • Maintain effective communication with SHE partners, funders, and regulators in a way that furthers positive working relationships.
  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor.

Must Haves

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Four years of progressively more responsible administrative and management experience with experience in grants management.
  • Demonstrated technical, management, and administrative experience and expertise appropriate to the specific program area(s).
  • Strong computer skills and experience with spreadsheets, presentation software and familiarity with databases.
  • Initiative and good judgment.
  • Ability to work compatibly with the Director, CEO and peers, as well as with staff and persons representing government agencies and the public.
  • The ability to communicate well with groups and individuals both orally and in writing.
  • Empathy for the housing and community needs and desires of low-income persons.
  • Demonstrated success in proposal writing.
  • A commitment to preserving and promoting the purpose and philosophy of SHE, particularly as expressed in the Statement of Values.


  • An appropriate vehicle for work use is required.
  • A valid California driver's license and current automotive liability insurance are required.
  • Willingness to travel throughout SHE service area.
