SHE Community Development Staff Successfully Completes Water Projects

August, 2001 — Our Community Development staff successfully completed water projects in Cotton Center, Southwest Shafter, and London, in addition to starting new endeavors in Porterville, Ducor, Biola, Raisin City, Casa Loma, and Bear Creek.

For the first time in SHE history, a USDA Community Facilities Grant was awarded for the construction of a test well. The $48,000 grant will be used in Raisin City.

Self-Help Enterprises assisted Kern County in obtaining a $739,000 grant and a $237,550 low interest loan from USDA/Rural Development for the Southwest Shafter Community Water Project. Construction of the new water lines that now service 89 homes and a school was finished in August 2001.

"One of the things a lot of people don't know is that you have to learn to work with the system; pay property taxes and insure the house, and maintain it. When it's yours it's part of you."
