Self-Help is honored to have an outstanding Board of Directors that is dedicated to the mission of improving lives in the San Joaquin Valley.
Alberto Arzate

Alberto Arzate joined the board in early 2008 as a continuation of his involvement and investment in his community. As a Business Resource Specialist with Community Services Employment Training (CSET), Alberto is able to interact with and assist others in his community.
“My work allows me to work with people in the community, and I want to be better prepared to help them. I also want to be more involved in the community.”
Alberto’s involvement extends to his participation on the Hispanic Advisory Committee and the Lindsay Chamber of Commerce.

Alex Peltzer

Alex Peltzer first became acquainted with Self-Help Enterprises while working for U.S. Representative Cal Dooley in Washington, D.C. Upon returning to Visalia he took a position as a reporter for the Visalia Times-Delta newspaper where was able to view the work of SHE first hand. Following his tenure with the Times-Delta, Alex worked in real estate with the agency of Peltzer and Burr, where he gained first - hand knowledge of the housing conditions in the San Joaquin Valley. Now employed as an attorney with the law firm of Dooley and Herr, Alex enjoys the opportunity to help an organization that has helped so many.
Bob Friesen

Bob’s relationship with Self-Help Enterprises goes back to 1968 when he helped SHE develop a counseling program for new homeowners. Bob is a housing professional whose life effort is helping low-income people with housing.
Duane Scott

“For many years I have admired the goals, and the job well done, by Self-Help Enterprises.”
Duane Scott’s involvement with SHE dates back to his experience as a former auditor of SHE’s financials. As a partner in the CPA firm Scott, Mainard & Langley, Inc., Duane brings considerable financial expertise to the SHE Board of Directors. Duane is active throughout the community, serving as a Board Member and Executive Treasurer of the Visalia Rotary Community Foundation and as a member of several civic and professional organizations.

Frances Ortiz

“I love my people, all of them, and I want to be able to help in the planning and constructing of safe, comfortable and affordable housing for all the families who dream. I’d like to see many dreams come true!”

Gary Rodriguez

Gary Rodriguez served as President of the Board of Directors in 2000 – 2001. Gary is a resident of Shafter, Kern County. Sr. Rodriguez teaches for Richland School District and also instructs their Citizenship classes. He first became acquainted with Self-Help Enterprises while working on the South Shafter Water Project. Rodriguez is a well-known community organizer and advocate and has served on the South Shafter Coalition for Better Water and the Shafter Association for Bilingual/Bicultural Education. He is a former Executive Board member for the Richland Teacher's Association and he is currently working environmental issues affecting his community.

Harvey May

Harvey May is founder and president of Paloma Development in Visalia. Harvey has tremendous experience in real estate development and has worked in both the public and private sectors. He previously served on the SHE Board of Directors from 1993-1999. "I am happy to be a part of the mission. SHE is an outstanding organization that makes tangible and life-changing impacts for participants and communities. It's great to be back on the board."
Isabel Olmos

Isabel Olmos, a resident of Porterville in Tulare County, is employed by Family HealthCare Network as a Community Service Coordinator. Ms. Olmos is also involved in many local organizations including the Porterville Chamber of Commerce, St. Anne’s Church, Safe from the Start and the Girl Scouts.
Ms. Olmos built her own self-help home in Porterville in 1981. Her daughter, Cynthia, recently completed a self-help home as well. In fact, Cynthia was a member of the group that built the 5,000 self-help home in the history of Self-Help Enterprises.
“My daughter and I are proud homeowners of self-help homes. My passion is to give all people the opportunity to own their own home,” said Ms. Olmos.
Ms. Olmos built her own self-help home in Porterville in 1981. Her daughter, Cynthia, recently completed a self-help home as well. In fact, Cynthia was a member of the group that built the 5,000 self-help home in the history of Self-Help Enterprises.

Jim Price

Jim Price has been active in the affordable housing and banking industry for many years, including affiliations with: Community Housing Council of Fresno; Family Self-Sufficiency Corps, Inc. (Fresno Housing Authority); Central Valley Financial Literacy Initiative; past Board member of NeighborWorks® Homeownership Center, Sacramento Region.
“I’ve been involved with community development the past ten years with a focus on affordable housing and have a strong respect for SHE and its impact on central Valley communities and families served. I firmly believe in SHE’s mission to improve the lives of low-income residents of the San Joaquin Valley.”
Jim is no stranger to the staff at SHE. In 2008, Jim assisted SHE as we developed and expanded our Foreclosure Counseling services. His broad range of experience combines to make Jim ideally suited to support the SHE mission as a board member.

Lupe Zuniga

Lupe Zuniga, a resident of Raisin City in Fresno County, is a community organizer employed by the Mennonite Central Committee. She first became acquainted with Self-Help Enterprises while working on water-quality and community development issues. Lupe is a Past-President and current member of the Raisin City School Board and s aid , “I am very impressed with the staff and the community work that SHE does. It is a unique organization and I am proud to be a part of it.”
Marv Hansen

Marvin Hansen, a 20 + year resident of Visalia and Vice President with Valley Business Bank with over 30 years banking experience. He has served as a board member with numerous organizations such as: Visalia Chamber of Commerce, Tulare-Kings Counties Estate Planning Council, Visalia Breakfast Rotary, The Private Industry Council and others.

Mike Mayo

Mike was elected to the Board in 2001. He is a social worker and promotes the development of affordable housing in the San Joaquin Valley.
Nicole Parra

Former Assemblywoman Nicola Parra is a dedicated advocate for the people of the San Joaquin Valley. Nicole served in the California State Assembly from 2002-2008. She currently is a member of the board of directors for the Fresno Community Food Bank, and is president of NMP Consulting, Inc.
Nicole has a long history of working with SHE on important quality of life issues for low-income families and especially farmworkers. She has been a particularly strong supporter of SHE’s efforts to improve water and wastewater services to small, unincorporated communities.

Ray Chavez

Ray in in his 10th two-year term on the SHE board of directors. He has served as President and Vice-President. A staunch and active supporter of youth sports, he has coached Little League baseball, Bobby Sox softball and AYSO soccer.
Ralph Rosedal

Ralph has rejoined the board after being an instrumental player in the creation of Self-Help Enterprises. Ralph served as the first Board President when SHE was incorporated in 1965. He has a long history of involvement in community development - working with the American Friends Service Committee, SHE, and other self-help organizations.
In addition to his work at SHE, Ralph is associated with the Reedley Mennonite Church, Mennonite Disaster Service, and Self-Help Housing of East Texas - the project he was working on prior to returning to the Valley and the SHE Board.

Sherry Tietjens

Sherry is a self-described workaholic. She is a very successful real estate broker and business woman. In addition to serving on the SHE Board, she also serves on the Board of the Tulare County Housing Authority. She is always looking for ways to create homeownership opportunities for people.
Yolanda Gonzales

Yolanda Gonzales has lived in Tulare County for many years. Her family was one of the first to build a self-help home in Earlimart. Having grown up in a rural community, Gonzales understands the challenges families face in acquiring decent and affordable housing. She manages the Preschool Program for the Visalia Unified School District. Yolanda is married to Larry. They have three children and live in Visalia.
